Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are now using a high-performance computer.

It provides the computing power of 150,000 laptops in one second.

Karlsruhe - Fast computers have become an indispensable part of science. "The faster high-performance computers solve mathematical equations and process data, the more detailed and reliable the simulations that can be viewed with them," explains Jennifer Buchmüller, Head of High Performance Computing at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). A luminary of international supercomputers is now coming to KIT: “HoreKa” (high-performance computer Karlsruhe) is one of the 15 most powerful computers in Europe.

The dimensions in which HoreKa works are immense: It manages 17 quadrillion arithmetic operations per second alone - that's equivalent to the work of more than 15,000 laptops.

The system will soon be available to scientists from all over Germany.

In particular, researchers from the fields of energy and mobility research, particle and astroparticle physics as well as materials and earth system sciences should benefit from this.

Theresia Bauer (Greens), Minister of Science of Baden-Württemberg *, also wants to be there when HoreKa starts up at KIT on Friday, July 30th (BW24 * reported).

Supercomputer at KIT in Karlsruhe: “Outstanding Placement” in a Global Comparison

HoreKa is not only a front runner in Europe: In the top 500 list of the fastest computers in the world, HoreKa ranks 52nd. The KIT super computer is also convincing in terms of sustainability.

HareKa landed on the international “Green 500” list of the most energy-efficient supercomputers worldwide in 13th place. “The outstanding ranking of HoreKa shows impressively that we at KIT are very well positioned with one of the most powerful and at the same time most energy-efficient supercomputers in Europe,” says Jennifer Buchmüller.

Supercomputer at KIT in Karlsruhe: Special computing power catapulted him to the top of the world

"Only a computer that makes it onto this list is considered a real supercomputer," explains Buchmüller.

"In order to be able to place HoreKa on the list, the computing power had to be measured with a special benchmark application," says Buchmüller.

The computing units solved a clearly defined system of equations.

The performance is then derived from the time required for this.

Not only Karlsruhe has made a name for itself in the "Ländle" as a top science location.

In the rest of Baden-Württemberg, too, research is being diligently pursued and supported with the necessary technical equipment.

For example, the first quantum computer in Europe was recently inaugurated near the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart *.
