District - City cycling in 2021 ended two weeks ago, but the final balance is now available.

As reported, the participants had until last Friday to enter the kilometers they cycled on www.stadtradeln.de.

And these numbers are definitely impressive.

A total of 1725 active participants were registered across the district - 129 teams were at the start.

The mileage corresponds to a CO2 saving of 53 tonnes and, with 357,637 kilometers, an 8.9-fold orbit around the world.

Holzkirchen is right at the top of the ranking of the participating municipalities.

With 588 active people in 33 teams, the market town covers 142 579 kilometers, which again corresponds to 21 tons of CO2.

In second place is Miesbach with 370 active in 16 teams with 67,511 kilometers and ten tons ahead of Otterfing with 170 active in twelve teams with 31,831 kilometers and five tons and Hausham with 155 active in 16 teams with 30,610 kilometers and four tons.

Weyarn followed with 102 active participants in eight teams with 21,779 kilometers and three tons ahead of Bad Wiessee with 98 active participants and 14 teams with 17,813 kilometers and three tons, Gmund with 95 participants in ten teams with 13,685 kilometers and two tons and Rottach-Egern with 45 athletes in five teams with 11,916 kilometers and two tons.

The other municipalities in the district did not participate in city cycling.

However, their citizens had the opportunity to participate in the campaign through the district.

These 102 participants came to 19,913 kilometers and three tons of CO2.

For climate protection manager Antonia Rüede-Passul at the district office, these results are very positive: "We have covered three times as many kilometers as in 2020. That is pretty strong." In the Oberland comparison, the district is in second place behind the Weilheim-Schongau district over 500,000 kilometers.

Better response generated

The fact that city cycling was able to enjoy such a response this time is due, on the one hand, to the fact that the participation period for the entire district was no longer in October, but this time had been brought forward to June 19 through July 9.

But people's awareness may also have increased.

“After all, cycling has experienced an upswing due to the corona pandemic.” And since e-bikes were not deliberately excluded, less well-trained people could also take part.

And maybe one or the other newly purchased bike has provided additional motivation.

The prizes that are currently being distributed can also be an incentive.

There are several Oberland cards to be won at the district.

New goals for 2022

The aim now is to top this result again in 2022.

It would be helpful if more municipalities were to take part in city cycling.

This time it became clear how great their influence is.

"Precisely because we as a district couldn't do our own actions, the offers in the municipalities were so important," states the climate protection manager who organized the event together with mobility manager Mona Dürrschmidt, ATS cycling officer Tom Coldewey and the coordinators in the municipalities .

The latter in particular made a very important contribution with their commitment.

It has not yet been determined when the campaign period will run.

"We will determine this together with the other districts," says Rüede-Passul.

This is done for marketing reasons.

"So we can reach people from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Miesbach in the same period with the same posters."

Above all, it is important to the climate protection manager that as many people as possible get on their bikes outside of city cycling and leave their cars behind.

After all, it is ultimately a question of reducing CO2 emissions.
