Fires are raging west of the Italian island of Sardinia, destroying thousands of hectares of green space around Monteviro, to the west of the island.
And the Italian Aki news agency quoted Antonio Taiani, the national coordinator of the Forza Italia party, as saying: "The government, along with the civil defense administration, must take urgent measures to demand the European Union to use the Solidarity Fund funds for Sardinia, which is stricken by the devastating fires."
For his part, Janis Linaric, the European Commissioner in charge of Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management at the European Commission, announced the provision of assistance to Italy to deal with forest fires on the island of Sardinia, within the framework of the civil protection mechanism.
The European Commission indicated that it would send four French and Greek planes to help Italian authorities stop the fires.
The fires caused severe damage to many homes in the west of the Mediterranean island and destroyed 10,000 acres of land around Monteviro, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people from their homes.
