Roni Daniel, a veteran and senior reporter at News 12, passed away today (Monday) at the age of 73 at his home from a heart attack. Daniel, the company's security commentator, was a heavy smoker. According to sources in the channel, there have been many times recently where he did not feel well.
Behind Daniel is a journalistic career that has lasted for about five decades, since he joined Kol Yisrael in 1971 as a reporter in the fields of transportation and agriculture. After a while, he began to cover the security field, and during the Yom Kippur War he was the first reporter to go up to Mount Hermon with Golani fighters.
In the 1980s, he worked for the IDF, and in the early 1990s he co-hosted the educational "Communication Portfolio" program. In 1993, he joined Channel 2 and served as a military and security correspondent for the new news company, and has since become one of its symbols.
The popular military commentator was a military man himself, with the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Regiment.
Among other things, he fought in the Six Day War on the Egyptian front, was wounded - but returned to the battlefield.
Later he participated in the fighting also in the war of attrition.
He was later appointed commander of the Golani Reserve Battalion, and also served as a battalion commander in the Negev Brigade.
