The Schönach in Schwabsoien should become more tangible

The Schönach and its mills are a trademark of the Schwabsoien community.

In the future, the course of the stream between Schmiedstrasse and Schönachstrasse is to be made more “tangible”.

The plans for an ecological renovation recently met with enthusiasm in the local council.

Schwabsoien - The Schönach rises in its "origin" at the western entrance to Schwabsoien and meanders through the village between the well-known mills before it flows further into the neighboring villages and finally flows into the Lech.

A walk on the Mühlenweg and the stream in Schwabsoien is already a natural experience.

In the future it should be an even bigger one.

Bertram Mooser from the engineering office of the same name in Kaufbeuren recently presented the plans to the Schwabsoien municipal council and a number of interested citizens.

Deeper areas alternate with shallow water zones

Basically, the Schönach is already beautiful, "but it has maintenance tasks ahead of it," explained the expert with a view to the embankments and ailing retaining walls that have been causing the community a headache for years (we reported).

With river stones of different sizes, wooden stakes, trees and plants, the office now wants to bring a little more order into the course of the stream.

Deeper areas alternate with shallow water zones, so-called groynes ensure that the flow speed is reduced.

Not concrete, but roots should hold up embankments in the long term.

According to Mooser, the end result is sustainable bank protection, including a "more tangible water space".

Existing footbridges should be renewed without interfering with the stream bed

The existing footbridges are to be renewed without interfering with the stream bed.

The community not only saves the money for expensive foundations in the stream, it also protects nature.

In general, the office attaches great importance to being close to nature during the interventions, after all, the Schönach is managed as a biotope at the water management office.

There are also plenty of grants from the Office for Rural Development for ecological renovation, and the expert in the municipal council also reported on possible “co-financing” of up to 90 percent.

The engineer estimates the construction costs at around 137,000 euros, with the planning fee on top of that.

After deducting the subsidies, which Mayor Manfred Schmid estimates at 75 to 80 percent, it could still be a bargain for the community.

Above all, because the stream renovation means a further upgrade for the Mühlenweg.

As is well known, it attracts many visitors to the Schönach community every year;

especially on the mill day celebrated at Pentecost.

Only positive requests to speak in the municipal council

After the lecture, there were only positive requests to speak in the local council.

The plans should "be pursued without fail", was the tenor.

Of course, the affected residents of Schönach still have to be brought on board.

Whereby you can hear that the "biggest" should have already sent positive signals.

There is no schedule yet.

This year, however, the Schönach renovation should not work out, says Mayor Schmid.

The next steps are now first talks with the citizens and the authorities, he emphasizes.

Also interesting:

The sirens in Schwabsoien are often difficult to hear.

The fire brigades should look for suitable locations so that the population can be better warned in the future.
