A US State Department official said on July 26 that the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was "professional" and "direct" in frank discussions with Chinese officials.

US officials said Sherman was brutally honest on issues including China's alleged involvement in hacking activities and the suppression of Hong Kong.

US State Department officials stated that senior US and Chinese diplomats held "frank and open" talks on the 26th.

The official said: "The Deputy Secretary of State is very strong in letting the Chinese know that we must support the factual messages we are talking about." The official also added that Sherman is sometimes "open and honest" on issues including China's alleged involvement in hacking.

The United States accused China of violating human rights in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet.

State Department officials said Sherman expressed concern about these issues.

The official said: "We are looking for constructive ways to advance some of these issues...I don't think we are expecting any major breakthroughs."

State Department officials said that Sherman also raised issues of media freedom and the Chinese military's actions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea during the meeting.

I discussed issues important to the US with PRC Vice FM Xie, including the climate crisis, COVID-19, and our serious concerns about PRC actions in Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and across the Taiwan Strait. The US and our allies and partners will always stand up for our values.
