A US State Department official said on July 26 that the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was "professional" and "direct" in frank discussions with Chinese officials.
US officials said Sherman was brutally honest on issues including China's alleged involvement in hacking activities and the suppression of Hong Kong.
US State Department officials stated that senior US and Chinese diplomats held "frank and open" talks on the 26th.
The official said: "The Deputy Secretary of State is very tough to let the Chinese know that we must support the facts we are talking about." The official also added that Sherman is sometimes "open and honest" in issues including China's alleged involvement in hacking.

The United States accused China of violating human rights in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet.
State Department officials said Sherman expressed concern about these issues.
An official from the State Department said: "We are looking for constructive ways to advance some of these issues... I don't think we are expecting any major breakthroughs."
The official said that Sherman also raised issues of media freedom and the Chinese military's actions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea during the meeting.

The Russian Guardian Network stated on the 26th that the United States stated its views during the talks, although the two sides did not reach a specific agreement, nor did they discuss issues that the leaders of the two countries might meet.
A senior government official said: "Achieving agreement or concrete results is not the purpose of today's dialogue."
