British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday called on his fellow citizens to "

remain very cautious

" about the health situation, despite a recent drop in cases of contamination of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom.

In the grip of an explosion in cases attributed to the highly contagious Delta variant since the start of the summer, the United Kingdom has recently recorded up to 60,000 new cases daily, but seems to have experienced a decline in recent days. Since July 20, the day after the last restrictions related to the virus were lifted, new contaminations have only decreased, reaching 24,950 new daily cases on Monday. That is a drop of more than 69,000 cases over the last seven days (-21.5%).

"

I obviously noticed that we had better numbers for six days,

" Boris Johnson told reporters on a trip to Guildford, south-west London. "

The fourth step out of containment took place only a few days ago,

" he said. "

People must remain very careful,

" he said, stressing that it was "

very important that we do not allow ourselves to jump to conclusions

" on this decline.

The current improvement leaves scientists somewhat perplexed, while the government and its scientific advisers had anticipated in early July up to 100,000 new positive cases per day in the second most bereaved country in Europe by the pandemic, with more than 129,000 dead.
