Fatal accident on an SNCF site in Massy: the body of the engineer still not found, an examining magistrate seized

2021-07-27T18:34:23.959Z

The site must still be secured to allow the resumption of research after the disappearance of an SNCF executive, buried following

Two days after the tragedy, his body has still not been found.

Guibert Rigah, 55-year-old SNCF director of operations, perished on Sunday July 25, 2021 around 3:30 p.m. on the Chartres and Gallardon bridges renewal site, on the RER network in Massy (Essonne).

This Martiniquan, father of two children, was buried after a structure collapsed in a borehole of more than 30 meters.

He was carrying out, with two other executive colleagues, a control visit.

An internal investigation is being carried out within the SNCF and since Monday, judicial information has been opened to seek the causes of his disappearance.

An investigating judge was also seized.

"He will in particular try to establish what happened and identify possible breaches that would lead to one or more criminal offenses," said Caroline Nisand, prosecutor of Évry.

Who specifies: “We must also establish a protocol for securing the sites, a sine qua non condition for the emergency services to continue the search.

"These have been suspended since Monday morning because the conditions are" extremely complicated ".

Until late at night from Sunday to Monday, 26 firefighters from Essonne, including a "clearing rescue" unit, a team of interventions in perilous environments, and cynotechnical reinforcements (with dogs) from the Yvelines attempted to find the victim, in vain.

The prefect of Essonne had activated the departmental operational center "to manage the consequences of this fatal accident and to coordinate all the services involved in the management of the event".

The circulation of 70 TGV from the Great West, supposed to pass a few meters from the scene, had been suspended to allow them to carry out their research without any more risk, before gradually resuming from 9 pm.

Since this tragedy, the entire railway industry has been in mourning.

Psychological support has been set up by SNCF and RATP.

These two entities are jointly carrying out work to renew the Chartres and Gallardon bridges, which are used for the circulation of the RER B and C trains, already suspended as part of the scheduled interruptions.

No date for the resumption of the site has yet been mentioned.

No date yet for the return of trains to the Chartres bridge

"We are currently evaluating the impact of the accident on RER B traffic over the next few weeks," indicates the RATP.

The main problem that we encounter concerns the routine maintenance of the RER B trains. This maintenance is done at the Massy workshop which is located on the line after the Chartres bridge.

As the bridge is made inaccessible, maintenance cannot be done.

This situation had naturally been anticipated to cover the necessary maintenance needs until August 12 (initial duration of the planned work).

To date, the immobilization of the construction site for the needs of the investigation and the necessary site security work that will follow do not allow us to know the date of the resumption of the passage of trains on the Chartres bridge. "
