Ver.di wanted to find out more about the working conditions at Amazon in Moosburg during a campaign on Monday morning: representatives sought to talk to the deliverers.

Moosburg

- One delivery vehicle after the other turns the corner early Monday morning into the distribution center in Moosburg's Degernpoint industrial estate. Thomas Hampel, union secretary at ver.di for the postal services department, can tell which subcontractor the approximately 200 drivers are working for by looking at the label or the license plate. "But that's not all, because there are around 100 Amazon Flex drivers who are on their own account and usually only find out at the end of the year when filing their tax return that they still have to pay taxes on the low hourly wage," explains Hampel den SPD politicians who stand in front of the gate early in the morning. Member of the state parliament Ruth Müller, district chairman Andreas Mehltretter, city councilor Gerd Beubl and Juso district chairman Michael Weindl had taken the opportunity toto find out about working conditions and problems at Amazon.

According to Hampel, the aim of the Monday morning campaign under the motto “Fair Mobility” was to talk to the parcel deliverers about working conditions and other challenges with regard to wage and temporary work, compliance with working hours and work safety.

Amazon operates a large distribution center in Moosburg, where the parcels are loaded onto the individual delivery vehicles.

The precarious working conditions at Amazon in combination with opaque structures are repeatedly a topic in the media and for the unions.

Of the more than 400 employees in Moosburg, only about 80 are permanently employed - the rest is with temporary employment agencies or subcontractors, according to ver.di.

Andreas Mehltretter, SPD district chairman and Bundestag candidate, welcomed the ver.di campaign: "It is important that we show our employees our solidarity and at the same time build public pressure to improve working conditions and pay." But he also saw himself in it confirms that there is a need for action in politics: "Amazon must also be liable for problems with subcontractors - but more controls are needed so that violations are really detected, at least the minimum wage is actually paid and bogus self-employment can be combated," said Mehltretter.

The deputy chairman of the Bavarian SPD parliamentary group, Ruth Müller, also met early in the morning in Degernpoint to support the action on the part of state politics. "We have a responsibility for the occupational health and safety of employees and also for ensuring that a decent pension can be achieved at the end of a working life," emphasized Müller. If entrepreneurs avoid it with the help of subcontractors while they have enough money to shoot themselves into space, in the end the solidarity community pays the bill for unsocial working conditions. "At least the Internet giants can no longer evade their tax responsibility, because Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz was able to enforce a global minimum taxation," says Müller happily.

Union secretary Thomas Hampel was satisfied after the Monday campaign: “In addition to new contacts, we were also able to take a lot of information from our colleagues through the campaign.

Union must not be a foreign word at Amazon. "
