Records at the Olympic Games

Weightlifting

1) Zhihui Hou from China set three Olympic records for her weightlifting participation in the women's 49 kilogram event.

The first was after lifting 94 kg in snatch (or snatch);

the other was after lifting 116 kg in two times (or

clean and jerk

; and the third was for his total of 210 kilograms, with which he won the gold medal.

2) Muattar Nabieva, from Uzbekistan, achieved an Olympic record in weightlifting, in the women's 55 kg event.

He did it in the snatch, lifting 98 kg.

Nabieva was in fourth place in this test, so she did not reach the podium.

3) Hidilyn Diaz from the Philippines set two Olympic records in the women's 55 kg event.

The first in two times after lifting 127 kg;

the second was for his final result in the competition, with a total of 224 kg.

Thanks to these marks, Diaz surpassed his rivals to win the Olympic gold in that event.

4) Fabin Li from China also set two Olympic records.

In his case, it was 61 kg in the men's test.

The first occurred in two times after lifting 172 kg;

the other, for the total of the competition with 313 kg.

In the midst of these marks, Li won the gold medal in this test.

5) Lijun Chen from China set two Olympic records in the men's 67kg event: the first was for lifting 187kg in two times;

meanwhile, the other was for achieving a total of 332 kg in the competition.

Chen took the gold medal in the event, as China followed his near-perfect pace in weightlifting (Diaz won the other gold in the discipline from China's Qiuyun Liao).

Swimming

1) The Australian women's team set a world record in the 4x100m freestyle event, setting a time of 3: 29.69 minutes, which was 0.36 seconds below the previous world record, which was also set by Australia in 2018 in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

With the time of this world record (which automatically also becomes an Olympic record), Australia won the gold medal in the event.

It is the third consecutive time that the country has won first place in this event at the Olympics.

2) Kathleen Ledecky, one of the superstars of the United States and of world swimming, set an Olympic record in the women's 1,500m freestyle semifinal, with a time of 15: 35.35 minutes.

Now, the final of this test will take place on Tuesday at 10:54 pm ET.

Ledecky is the favorite to win the gold, but there can always be surprises, just as there were in the 400m freestyle event, but we will talk about that later.

3) Regan Smith, from the United States, broke the Olympic record for the women's 100m backstroke with a time of 57.86.

With this time, she won the semifinal and, of course, a place in the fight for the gold medal in this test, where she will start as the favorite this Monday at 9:51 pm ET.

4) Tatjana Schoenmaker, from South Africa, achieved the Olympic record in her qualifying series of the women's 100m breaststroke (or breaststroke), with a time of 1: 04.82 minutes.

In both qualifying and the semifinal, Schoenmaker came in first place, which is why he is emerging as the favorite for the final of this test, which will take place this Monday at 10:17 pm ET.

5) Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden set an Olympic record (time 52.62 seconds) for intermediate distance in the final of the 4x100m freestyle event, in which Australia won gold and a world record.

Despite Sjoestroem's Olympic record, Sweden took sixth place in this final, thus failing to take the podium.

Rowing

1) The Netherlands team set the best Olympic record in the men's double scull event (ie two rowers in the same boat, with each athlete carrying two oars, one in each hand).

The record (6:08.38 minutes) was set in one of the qualifying heats, where the Netherlands came in first.

In the semi-final, the nation also came in first place making it a favorite to win gold on Tuesday at 8:30 pm ET.

2) For its part, Australia also achieved the best Olympic record, but in the test of four without a female helmsman (that is, four T-shirts in the same boat, with a single paddle for each athlete).

Australia set the record in a qualifying round, in which they came in first place.

It will look for gold on Tuesday at 8:50 pm ET.

Threw

In shooting, more than 10 Olympic and Olympic qualification records have already been broken, from July 24 to July 26.

Four of those records are from China and three from the United States.

Archery

In these Games, three Olympic records have been set, all for the great power of archery: South Korea.

These records were in the round of 70m, 72 arrows, female individual;

70m round, 216 arrows, women's team;

and round of 70 m, 144 arrows, mixed team.

All three were in qualifying rounds.

Surprises

1) Kathleen Ledecky

One of the biggest surprises came in the women's individual 400m freestyle final.

Kathleen Ledecky arrived as the Olympic champion of the event, after winning gold in Rio 2016 (where she also won three more golds in three other events; and that without counting her first Olympic gold in London 2012 when she was just 15 years old).

Ledecky had just won his qualifying round and became more established as a favorite, but in the final he was second after being beaten by the Australian Ariarne Titmus, who set the record for Oceania.

Additionally, Titmus won Australia's first gold in this event since 1972.

2) Japan and table tennis

Another surprise was in table tennis, in the final of the mixed team event, which is the first time it has been played in the Olympic Games.

Japan's mixed doubles pair, made up of Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito, won their country's first Olympic table tennis gold medal (and the first in the history of this event) on Monday with a dramatic victory over the Chinese couple, Xu Xin and Liu Shinwen.

Mizutani and Ito rallied two sets against to win 4-3, and won the last set 11-6.

The victory of the Japanese couple ended years of incredible Chinese dominance in the sport.

China had won every Olympic table tennis title since South Korea's Ryu Seung-min triumphed in the men's singles competition at the 2004 Athens Games.

3) Nishiya Momiji, gold medal at age 13

It is not a surprise as such, but the medal he won does represent a historical fact.

Nishiya Momiji from Japan won the women's skateboarding competition.

At just 13 years old, she is now one of the youngest gold medalists in Olympic history and the first in this discipline for the women's category.

Momiji is only a few months older than the current female record holder, American diver Marjorie Gestring, who was 13 years and 267 days old when she won gold at the Berlin Games in 1936.

Momiji's victory came just one day after compatriot Yuto Horigome won the first Olympic gold medal in skateboarding in the men's competition.

4) Anna Kiesenhofer

Anna Kiesenhofer from Austria gave one of the biggest surprises of the Olympics so far.

Kiesenhofer, who was a triathlete until 2014 when she had to leave the sport due to an injury, had modest achievements in cycling and was not among the favorites.

In fact, she was best known for her academic profile: she has a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge (England) and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona (Spain)

However, she was separated from all the riders 38.5 km from the end of the women's road cycling event.

And from there, no one caught up with her and she beat the Dutch Annemiek van Vleuten by 1 minute 15 seconds, who took the silver.

5) Naomi Osaka

One of the biggest surprises so far at Tokyo 2020. Japan's Naomi Osaka, a four-time world No. 2 major tournament champion, lost to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic on Tuesday in the third round of women's singles tennis in the Olympic Games.

Osaka was considered a favorite to win the tournament in her home country, but was eliminated earlier than expected after a disappointing performance, ending with 32 unforced errors.

This is the first time the 23-year-old Japanese superstar has lost on a hard court before the quarterfinals since the 2020 Australian Open, when she lost in the third round to American Coco Gauff.

Osaka was born in Osaka, Japan, and was awarded the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron to officially open the Games.

Vondrousova, a 2019 French Open finalist, advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The 22-year-old will face Spain's Paula Badosa or Argentina's Nadia Podoroska.

6) Simone Biles

Another of the biggest surprises of the competition so far.

Simone Biles withdrew from the women's gymnastics team event on Tuesday, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee confirmed to CNN.

Biles withdrew from the women's team final after leaving the field to be treated by the coach.

He returned with his foot heavily bandaged, but did not warm up for the uneven bars, the second device in the United States.

Instead, he heated Jordan Chiles.

Biles was looking to expand his track record of four gold medals won at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"Simone, in the first test of the first rotation of the team competition ..., she went out of her horse jump," said CNN sports analyst Christine Brennan.

Curious moments

1) He celebrated, but had not won

Annemiek van Vleuten, from the Netherlands, was the one who starred in one of the moments that were out of the ordinary.

Kiesenhofer had already won the race and the gold medal.

But Van Vleuten did not know it because of the great distance that the Austrian took all the cyclists.

The Dutchwoman, on reaching the finish line, raised her arms and celebrated as if she had won the gold medal, until she was informed that it was silver.

"This is an example (of what happens) if you run an important race like this without communication. I am devastated by that, of course. (But) I am very proud of the medal, because I did not have an Olympic medal. It is also a shiny silver medal, because today I felt very good, "said Van Vleuten after the race.

2) Athletes playing with masks

Another of the things that attracts the most attention in these Olympics is the fact that they are carried out in the middle of a pandemic.

Athletes often wear face masks before competitions, between breaks and at the award ceremony.

But there are moments that capture the eye of the cameras more, such as seeing athletes with face masks while they compete. This is the case of volleyball players from Brazil, specifically Lucas Saatkamp and Mauricio Borges Almeida Silva.

3) Marriage proposal

On the other hand, it also highlights the moment when an Argentine fencer receives a marriage proposal after losing her fight.

Argentine fencer María Belén Pérez Maurice missed her chance to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday.

After their match, her boyfriend had a surprise.

Pérez Maurice was in the middle of his post-match interview, following her 15-12 loss to Hungarian Anna Marton in the women's individual saber, when Lucas Guillermo Saucedo, his partner and coach, proposed with a large handwritten note that read : "Will you marry me?".

In the images that were shared on the Internet, Pérez Maurice is seen turning around, seeing the message and screaming before quickly accepting the marriage proposal of his partner of 17 years, who got down on his knees.

The couple hugged and shared a kiss.
