American gymnast Simone Biles said she withdrew from the team finals on Tuesday due to mental health issues.

Biles burst into tears while addressing the media after the women's team gymnastics final in which Team USA won the silver medal.

"Whenever you find yourself in a high stress situation, you freak out," he said.

"I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being."

"We have to protect our body and our mind," added Biles.

"It just sucks when you're fighting with your own head."

Biles said that those who compete are "not just athletes, we are people at the end of the day."

The team plans to have a "mental rest day" tomorrow, Biles added.

This morning, Team USA took the silver medal in the women's gymnastics team competition after superstar Simone Biles retired.

After the event, Biles said that she is proud of how her team stepped up.

"I'm proud of how the girls stepped up and did what they had to do. I owe it to the girls, it has nothing to do with me. I'm very proud of them," she said.

When asked what he said to the rest of the team when he retired, Biles said he told them: "You have done all the training, you can do it without me and everything will be fine."

After retiring, Biles told the BBC that he is "dealing with things internally."

"I'm just dealing with things internally that will be fixed in the next few days," he said.

Biles's withdrawal from the team gymnastics competition came after he scored a disappointing 13,766 score on the vault in the first rotation of the team event.

The International Gymnastics Federation confirmed shortly thereafter in a tweet that Biles would not participate in the team competition again, without giving a reason for the withdrawal.

Simone Biles withdraws from team gymnastics event due to medical issue

By Amy Jordan and George Ramsay

Simone Biles withdrew from the team gymnastics event, USOPC confirmed to CNN.

A CNN crew that attended the event saw Biles sitting on the sidelines and her foot wrapped.

Biles was looking to add to his spoils of four gold medals won at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The US Gymnastics team confirmed in a statement Tuesday that Simone Biles's withdrawal from the gymnastics team event competition was due to a "medical problem."

The full statement posted on the Twitter account reads: “Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final team competition due to a medical problem.

She will be evaluated daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.

"Thinking of you, Simone!"

Simone Biles' withdrawal from the team gymnastics event came after she scored a disappointing 13,766 score on the vault in the first rotation of the team event.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed shortly after in a tweet that Biles would not participate in the team event again without giving a reason for the withdrawal.

On Sunday, Biles took to Instagram to reflect on the pressure of competing in the Games.

In a post, Bile wrote: “I really feel like sometimes I have the weight of the world on my shoulders.

I know I forget and it makes it seem like the pressure doesn't affect me, but damn it's hard sometimes hahaha.

The Olympics are not a joke! "

As the women's gymnastics team event progresses, a CNN team in attendance reports seeing Simone Biles clapping and cheering for her teammates from the bench.

Biles earlier received a hug from one of the US gym coaches, while another coach rubbed his shoulders.

Biles was even seen dancing with his replacement, Jordan Chiles.

Chiles participates in their first Olympic Games and competes alongside Sunisa Lee and Grace McCallum in the team event.

The 20-year-old stepped onto the plate and scored 13,433 useful points to keep the pressure on the current leaders, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

After three rotations, Team USA is behind the ROC by less than one point as we head to the fourth and final rotation: the floor routine.
