The United States said Tuesday it was suspending cooperation with prosecutors in Guatemala after the dismissal and flight of the country's top anti-corruption magistrate.

The administration of President Joe Biden, which has made the fight against corruption a priority, said the dismissal of prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval showed a lack of

"good faith"

on the part of Attorney General Consuelo Porras, who heads so-called

“public prosecution” services.

"As a result, we have lost confidence in the attorney general,"

State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter told reporters.

"The US government is temporarily suspending the planned cooperation with the (Guatemalan) public prosecutor, the time to conduct a review of our assistance to the activities of the attorney general,"

she said.

"We remain attentive to any new actions that could weaken the rule of law or the independence of the judiciary in Guatemala."

Juan Francisco Sandoval, who received an award this year from US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken for his anti-corruption activities, said he fled the Central American country out of fear for its safety.

Joe Biden's American government says it wants to fight corruption in Central America to eliminate one of the causes of the departure of migrants wishing to join the United States.
