The Max Planck Society is completely repositioning itself in Martinsried.

There the campus is to be developed into a flagship for “life sciences” and interdisciplinary cutting-edge research by 2033.

Planegg

- The Max Planck Institutes for Neurobiology and Biochemistry in Martinsried are getting on in years.

There is a considerable need for renovation of the more than 50-year-old facilities, said architect Christoph Nagel-Hirschauer on Tuesday evening in the Planegger municipal council.

The building technology is out of date, the fire protection no longer meets future requirements, and energy needs to be upgraded.

Open science campus

Nagel-Hirschauer is head of the Life Science Campus Martinsried group, a department that the General Administration of the Max Planck Society founded specifically to redesign the 75,000 square meter area.

An open science campus is to be built there in the immediate vicinity of the Innovation and Start-up Center for Biotechnology (IZB) and the faculties of the LMU.

As reported, the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology and the Institute for Ornithology, which was previously located in Seewiesen (District of Starnberg), will be merged to form a new joint institute for biological intelligence.

"The campus is to become an international lighthouse project for bio-science," said Nagel-Hirschauer.

Build upwards

The location of the facilities should be based on the new underground station in Martinsried.

Existing buildings are to be replaced for the most part by new ones, whereby one wants to go more in height than in area.

How many storeys - possibly also graduated - are tolerable at the location should be decided in close consultation with the municipality.

“We live in times when space is scarce.

Building large areas is no longer justifiable today, ”said Jürgen Peters (Greens), like other local councils, in favor of the objective.

Cornelia David (FWD) spoke out in favor of involving citizens in the planning at an early stage.

Free State supports major project with 500 million

For the major project, which the Free State is supporting with up to 500 million euros, the first step is to revise the development plan.

In this context, it should also be clarified which buildings will remain.

Nagel-Hirschauer emphasized that there should not be any more building rights.

The western green corridor will not be touched either and the building limit will be respected there.

However, there are plans to create expansion areas for the IZB and commercial areas for biotech companies that have been outsourced there.

The Max Planck Society wants to build a new data center before construction begins.

In addition, an additional power supply must be created.

Start of construction announced for 2026

The Max Planck Society hopes that the development plan will be revised by 2023. Then the urban structure of the campus will be decided - probably with an architectural competition. If the building permit is available by the end of 2025, the excavators should roll in in the first quarter of 2026. According to the schedule, the first phase of construction is to be completed by 2029, the second by 2033.
