A series of demonstrations are planned for the weekend in Berlin.

Two are now banned.

It cannot be ruled out that the courts will still have to deal with this.

Berlin - Two “lateral thinking” rallies against the corona policy planned for the weekend in the capital have been banned.

This was announced by a spokesman for the Berlin police on Wednesday evening.

"Taking into account and after assessing the objective situation, we have so far banned two gatherings, one on July 31 and one on August 1, 2021." The police did not say which demonstrations they were, even when asked.

The examination of further meetings is still ongoing.

On Sunday, among other things, a “lateral thinking” rally is planned for the afternoon on Straße des 17. Juni near the Brandenburg Gate.

The organizers of the initiative “lateral thinking 711” had registered 22,500 participants, as their spokesman Michael Ballweg said on Wednesday before the ban became known.

The Stuttgart initiative called for the event under the motto "The year of freedom and peace - life after the pandemic".

According to RBB information, the rally is one of the events prohibited by the police assembly authority.

Ballweg said on Wednesday evening that he was not yet aware of it.

According to the spokesman, the Berlin police are preparing for a work-intensive and force-intensive weekend.

“We are currently evaluating all the circumstances and findings.” All follow-up measures are based on this.

"That means: our operational concept, the detailed planning of the forces including the requirement of support forces, but also a decision on whether and which assembly should be issued regarding a ban."

The organizers of the rally of “lateral thinking 711” have drawn up an “emergency concept” in the event of a ban.

"We have to prepare for it when meetings that are critical of the government are simply banned across the board," said Ballweg.

"Then we have no other option than to examine alternatives."

Various scenarios are taken into account in the “emergency concept” that the dpa has received.

In the event that the rally on Sunday afternoon should be banned and the Straße des 17. Juni should be cordoned off, it is suggested that the participants be sent to another location such as Tempelhofer Feld.

Ballweg said on Wednesday evening with a view to possible bans: "There is still the legal way."

At the end of August 2020, the Berlin authorities had already banned a rally of the initiative “lateral thinking 711” on Straße des 17. Juni, for which 22,000 participants had been registered.

The reason given by the police was that the gathering of tens of thousands of people, often without a mask or distance, posed too high a health risk for the population.

The Berlin Administrative Court overturned the decision at the time, arguing that there were insufficient indications of an imminent threat to public safety.

The state was unable to demonstrate that the hygiene concept presented by the organizers should not be adhered to.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court subsequently confirmed the lifting of the ban.
