The Union's large-scale election campaign kick-off in Rust has been canceled.
Instead, the party wants to meet on August 21 in Berlin.
Berlin - Actually it should have been a multi-day event in the Europapark Rust. But nothing will come of it now. Because out of consideration for the severe weather disaster in Germany, the Union is relocating its election campaign to the federal capital. Instead of the amusement park in Baden-Württemberg, a “central election campaign kick-off on August 21 in a different setting in Berlin” is to be found in a letter to the Bundestag candidates signed by CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak and CSU General Secretary Markus Blume.
According to the original planning, in addition to Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet and CSU leader Markus Söder, all Bundestag candidates from the CDU and CSU should have participated.
That plan has now changed.
After a hybrid event, “Germany's largest door-to-door campaign in the whole country, the hot election campaign phase” will be ushered in.
Election campaigns take place on site with the people.
"With this we make it clear that the CDU and CSU are campaigning for citizens to trust our ideas and positions all over Germany."
Union postpones election campaign: "Reconstruction work requires our attention"
According to the letter, the background to the change in plan is the flood disaster: "The crisis management and reconstruction work in the regions affected by the storm require our attention and commitment." In North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, the clean-up work continues.
The general election is due on September 26th.
The end of the election campaign of the CDU and CSU is planned for September 24th on the Nockherberg in Munich.
Union in the election campaign: Armin Laschet on summer tour
At the beginning of July, CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak had announced a large-scale summer tour of the Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet.
The tour should take place taking into account the respective corona measures.
Big events should always be online events at the same time.
Nevertheless, there should also be a doorstep election campaign.
“Maybe not just at the front door, but more on the garden fence,” it said.
