After the explosion in the Chempark in Leverkusen, the North Rhine-Westphalian State Environment Agency (LANUV) assumes that highly toxic substances have entered residential areas.
Leverkusen - The NRW Environment Agency (LANUV) assumes after the explosion in the Leverkusen Chempark that there are “dioxin, PCB and furan compounds” that were carried into surrounding residential areas via the cloud of smoke.
According to information from the office, chlorinated solvents, among other things, were also stored in the affected tanks, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
"We are therefore currently assuming that dioxin, PCB and furan compounds were carried into the surrounding residential areas via the cloud of smoke," it said.
The concentration in which this actually happened is currently still being investigated.
The investigations are quite complex.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday morning in Leverkusen's Chempark.
After the detonation, a tank farm burned at the disposal center.
For example, residents were urged not to eat fruits or vegetables from the garden that had soot on them.
