The Australian authorities announced today that the general closure measures in force in Sydney, the largest city in the country since the end of last June, to confront the Corona pandemic, will not be lifted as scheduled at the end of this month, but will be extended an additional month until the 28th of next August, due to the high epidemiological curve and the low rates of immunization against the virus. .
"I understand very well the difficulty of what we are asking of people over the next four weeks... but the reason for that is that we want to protect our community and make sure we can recover as quickly as possible," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian was quoted by AFP as saying.
"We really need people to always behave as they should... Don't let your guard down," she added.
Under the measures in place, Sydney residents can only go out to buy necessities, get medical care, exercise or go to work if necessary, while schools will remain closed, with the authorities encouraging citizens to stay at home.
Sydney was due to end the closure measures five weeks after their entry into force, that is, on July 30.
In exchange for extending the measures in Sydney, Victorian Prime Minister Dan Andrews announced that the closure measures that were in place in Melbourne two weeks ago were lifted yesterday thanks to “determination and hard work.”
Australia, which has largely escaped the first waves of the pandemic, is currently witnessing an accelerating outbreak of the most contagious delta mutant in a country that has so far vaccinated only 13 percent of its 25 million population.
