Digitization is increasingly contributing to the accumulation of vast amounts of data on our smartphones and computers.

At some point you will notice that the memory is full.

USB sticks and microSD memory cards are practical because of their size, but they don't offer a lot of storage space.

If you want to back up all the photos, videos and other files on your mobile phone and PC, an external hard drive is an option.

This offers much more storage space and it can also be taken anywhere and connected to different devices.

External hard drives are therefore ideally suited as an additional backup for your files.

In the next section we will reveal what to look for when buying.

External Hard Drive: The Main Features

  • Of course, is

    space

the external hard drive is the most important factor.

    With

    1 terabyte

    (

    TB

    )

you usually have enough space for all of your files.

However, when you're dealing with large files - like high-resolution photos and videos - you should consider buying a hard drive with more storage space.

  • Another important deciding factor is the

    connection

    the drive will use.

Many external hard drives use the conventional

    USB

    -

    A

    -

    connections

    .

    However, for higher speeds,

    consider

    USB

    -

    C

    .

Logically, you should orient yourself to the connections on your PC or laptop.

  • In addition, the external hard drive should be

    robust and reliable

so that you can store your data safely and without worry.

  • Conveniently, they are

    small enough

to be carried in a bag and kept safe when traveling.

External hard drives: More information

Why is the PC showing less space than indicated?

You will find that the hard drives

show less storage space

,

as indicated by the manufacturer

. This is because computers use binary numbering, which is why they count, for example, 1,024 megabytes as one gigabyte. So if you bought a 1 terabyte external hard drive, your PC will only show you 931 gigabytes, even though it is actually the correct number of bytes.

What is the difference between HDD and SSD?

Without going into too much detail, the difference lies in the construction.

An SSD has no mechanical parts and is therefore

more robust

, which is why it does not suffer much damage even if it is dropped.

If you drop the HDD hard drive, you are more likely to lose data.

In addition, an

SSD is much faster than an HDD

- but they also cost a little more.
