Germany has long been one of the countries with the most powerful passports.
But in 2021 another nation will have the edge.
A “powerful” passport allows a lot of freedom when traveling.
For example, you do not need a visa for many countries or you can apply for and receive one on arrival.
Depending on the country of issue, a passport can offer you more or less advantages.
The German passport in particular has repeatedly achieved top positions - if not first place - in various rankings in recent years.
In 2021, however, another nation will leave the field behind.
German passport not the most powerful: this is the front runner
There are several rankings that
break down
the
most powerful passports in the world
based on various measurement criteria.
One of them is the "Henley Passport Index".
At the top are often the passports of Asian countries such as Japan and Singapore - but the German passport is also regularly one of the most valuable.
This year, however,
Japan is
once again
grabbing
the crown: With the Japanese passport, 193 countries can be visited without a visa or a visa can be applied for directly on arrival (“visa on arrival”).
However, the ranking does not take into account the entry restrictions that currently exist due to the corona pandemic

German passport in the "Global Passport Index"
"Henley & Partners" uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for its "Henley Passport Index". In other rankings, such as Arton Capital's “Global Passport Index”, however, the official information from the 199 UN member states and territories is used as the data basis. In this evaluation, the
German passport took first place last year
. But even in 2021 it will be left out:
New Zealand
is at the top this year with 138 countries that can be entered without a visa or with “visa on arrival”. Germany, together with Spain and Australia, is only just behind - there are 137 countries here.
