Biles will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis to determine whether or not to participate in the finals of the individual events next week.

Simone Biles will not defend her Olympic title: The American gymnastics superstar withdrew from Thursday's women's singles final to focus on her mental health.

The US gymnastics team said in a statement Wednesday that the 24-year-old has decided not to compete.

The decision comes a day after Biles withdrew from the team final because she felt she was not mentally ready.

Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles's place in the full contest.

Carey did not qualify initially because she was third American behind Biles and Sunisa Lee.

The rules of the International Gymnastics Federation limit countries to two athletes per event in the finals.
