The government of Panama allocated approximately US $ 102 million for the acquisition of doses against the covid-19, informed the Minister of Economy and Finance Héctor Alexander, who told CNN that from the beginning it was established "that no there was going to be a lack of resources for vaccines and that it was much better if they were left over than they were missing ".

"How many countries like Panama have 9.2 million vaccines contracted, which implies enough doses for the entire population?" Asked the Minister of Economy and Finance.

Panama has more than 4 million inhabitants, according to data from the 2010 period with a projection to 2020 from the National Institute of Statistics and Census.

The census is carried out every 10 years, but at the moment, due to the pandemic, it has not yet been updated.

Minister Alexander highlights that vaccination is one of the main instruments of public policy, and that the speed with which the doses reach Panamanians is what will sustain the reopening of economic activity or the strength with which it can be recovered. economy.

From January of this year until the afternoon of this Tuesday, Panama received 3,458,610 vaccines against the coronavirus from Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca.

Of these, 2,306,560 have already been applied, between first and second doses, of which 1,785,896 correspond to Pfizer-BioNTech, as detailed by the Minister of Health, Eyra Ruiz, during the weekly report on the situation of covid-19 in Panama .

This Tuesday, the country received 456,300 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech against the coronavirus, which according to the Ministry of Health will serve to reinforce the immunization process, which in recent days is done through sweeps in different parts of the country, aimed at the population from 16 years of age and from 12 years of age with chronic diseases or disability.

During these immunization days, 91,321 doses were applied this Friday;

101,944 this Saturday and 83,510 this Sunday.

The Minister of Economy and Finance specified that for the immunization campaign the government has "committed in its entirety about US $ 102 million", of which "a part has been paid and another would be to be paid in remittances that will continue to come."

Until the afternoon of this Tuesday, Panama accumulated 431,554 confirmed cases of covid-19, of which 6,781 died from complications associated with the disease.

Currently, there are 12,828 actively infected, 623 of them hospitalized and 121 in intensive care.
