South Africa today condemned the decision to grant Israel the status of an observer member of the African Union, indicating that it was "unfair and unjustified."
The South African Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement posted on its website that “the decision to grant (Israel) observer status is the most shocking in a year when the oppressed Palestinian people were hunted down by devastating bombardment and the continuation of illegal settlement of the land,” adding that “the decision of the African Union Commission In this context, it is unfair, unjustified and inexplicable.”
The statement pointed out that the African Union rejects the practices and crimes of the Israeli entity against the Palestinians and its destruction, noting that the violations and unjust acts committed by the occupation authorities "offend the letter and spirit of the African Union Charter."
The statement was surprised by the decision to grant Israel the status of an observer member of the African Union at a time when it continues to commit brutal crimes against the Palestinians, indicating that the South African government will request the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to provide all member states with a briefing on this decision, which we hope will be discussed by the Council.
