Members of the epidemic team met tonight (Wednesday) to discuss once again the administration of a third dose of corona virus to the elderly, after two discussions already held on the subject ended without a decision. Approval for another dose has not yet been given by the US FDA, but the Department of Health would like to receive a recommendation for the additional vaccine. There is a majority for the move, but committee members are divided.
Tonight's discussion deals with three main questions: whether it is right to vaccinate the elderly in another dose, when it is worthwhile to start vaccinating and what the age continuum will be, with the majority at this stage preferring to focus on those aged 70 and over. The members of the committee disagree on whether to recommend receiving the third dose, or to be content with opening up the possibility to certain populations.
During the hearing, representatives from the Ministry of Health said that the benefit of the vaccine in preventing serious illness for those aged 60 and over, who were vaccinated during January, drops to 81% in July.
For those aged 60 and over who were vaccinated in February, the benefit of the vaccine dropped to 83%, while for those in the age group who were vaccinated in March, the benefit of preventing serious illness dropped to 94%.
It was further said that for 59-40 year olds, 93% efficiency was maintained.

The decision to bypass the regulatory authority in the United States raises serious concerns, but there are ample findings that vaccine efficacy declines among those aged 60 and over who received the vaccine six months ago, with the highest risk of severe coronary heart disease and even death from the deadly virus.
According to the Ministry of Health, the protection against serious illness is maintained at 91% against the Delta strain, but the protection against infection drops below 40%.
The risk in Israel is double because many believe they have nothing to fear because they received the vaccine and therefore do not adhere to the rules of social distance and masks, but the findings show that the vaccine does not protect hermetically as before.
