A huge thundercloud about twelve kilometers high showed the radar of the German Weather Service (DWD) over the region on Monday evening.
For the head of the regional weather consultancy in Munich, Guido Wolz, it was therefore no surprise that this so-called super cell would trigger a major storm.
With a look at the current weather forecasts, the experts are also certain: The danger in the form of strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall remains.
At its peak up to 62 liters of rain per hour
Already on Monday morning, the DWD issued a weather warning for the region, which spread from Irschenberg in a westerly direction. For the districts of Miesbach and Rosenheim, Wolz says: “We have wind speeds of up to 101 kilometers per hour on the radar. That's enough to knock down a few trees, ”says Wolz. In addition, there was heavy rain with a peak of 62 liters per hour. A value that is rarely found in the region. In addition, hailstones with a diameter of around five centimeters caused unrest among the Rosenheim hail pilots, as headed by Georg Vogl reports. “We were in the air on time with both aircraft to chop the grains.” Despite the rising darkness, the experts were able to see on the radar after just over an hour that the mission was successful.Until shortly before 8 p.m. the pilots fought against the "enormous masses of water", flew in zigzag over the district to about Sachsenkam in the west and Bad Wiessee in the south and then returned safely to the airfield in Vogtareuth. Vogl is certain that the hail damage was significantly less than feared.
Silver iodide is said to prevent the formation of larger hailstones
The hail fliers bring silver iodide into thunderclouds.
This is intended to create so-called artificial crystallization nuclei on which layers of ice accumulate like a shell.
This causes an increased formation of hailstones in the clouds, but these remain smaller and ideally only arrive on the ground as sleet or heavy rain.
The principle of “cloud inoculation” is, however, not without controversy.

Risk of storms also in the next few days
According to the weather expert Wolz, the current situation is still dangerous.
Due to the subtropical warm air, the humidity is so high that violent thunderstorms can occur again until Saturday, especially in the evening hours.
"Only from the weekend will the air masses be pushed to the east and it will be colder," confirms Wolz.
Until then, you should be prepared for strong gusts of wind including heavy rainfall in the entire region.
