The municipality of Haag will buy air purifiers for the classrooms of their elementary school - despite the stomach ache a councilor had with them.

Haag

- “I have a lot of stomach ache”: Councilor Elisabeth Maier vented her anger at the previous council meeting.

The committee had to vote on whether to purchase air purification devices for the primary school and day care centers for the purpose of infection protection.

The committee grudgingly agreed on a compromise.

Corona is an omnipresent topic.

So it is also important for the municipality of Haag to orient itself to the recommended hygiene concepts.

The government has recently recommended placing air purification devices indoors to reduce the risk of infection.

"There are no studies that prove its effectiveness beyond any doubt," said local councilor Elisabeth Maier, explaining her concerns.

"The municipalities are now spending a fortune without knowing whether the purchase will be of any use at all." Maier was not at all enthusiastic about this: "Simply spending money out of fear makes me building pains, otherwise we will be careful with our finances."

The committee thinks air purifiers make more sense in schools than in daycare

Mayor Anton Geier agreed with his council colleague to a certain extent, but pleaded for at least the equipment for the eight classrooms of the elementary school to be purchased immediately: "The government's latest letter already indicates that facilities without the equipment in question may be closed again in the fall will be affected ”, said the head of the community.

"So if we had to close because we didn't buy the devices, that would be fatal for our children." Councilor Elisabeth Maier remained true to her concerns: "I do not want to indirectly support and endorse the idea of the state government by purchasing the devices."

The committee agreed that the critically viewed air purifiers make more sense in elementary school than in kindergarten.

"In school, the students keep a distance from one another, so air cleaning can make sense because otherwise there is no contact," says Geier.

“In the kindergarten or day care center, on the other hand, you cannot forbid the children from touching each other.” Air purification in appropriate facilities is therefore more or less superfluous: If a child has Corona, then the other children would do it just because of the constant Infect body contact and not just "through the infected air".

Committee agrees on a compromise

The committee finally agreed on the compromise: First of all, eight devices for the elementary school should be ordered immediately. The municipality of Haag will then finance the seven other devices that will be needed to supply all of the care facilities in the Hague through a subsidy fund from the state government. Nine municipal councilors approved this proposal, and three spoke out completely against the purchase of the air purifier - including Elisabeth Maier.
