Biontech / Pfizer have published new data on the corona booster vaccination.

The protection is significantly higher.

But a distinction is important.

Not all of them need a third dose.

Mainz - Are two doses enough or does the coronavirus vaccination have to be refreshed?

With the increasing spread of the delta variant, the question of a third dose arises again and again.

The so-called booster vaccination.

Biontech / Pfizer have now published promising data in their quarterly report.

You are aiming for approval.

Corona booster vaccination: Biontech / Pfizer reveal data - clear differences between variants

In the newly published overview, the manufacturers Biontech / Pfizer examined a third vaccination six months after the second dose.

This is how long the full protection of the second dose should last.

Subsequently, "the protective effect of the vaccine against infections and symptomatic diseases is reduced," the manufacturers announced in a press release in early July.

"The vaccination protection against severe courses remains high."

The new data relate to the antibody titre, the number of antibodies in the blood.

It can be viewed as a measure of the protective effect.

The results provide clear differences in the booster between the different Corona variants.

A booster vaccination increases the number of titers by five to eight times compared to the coronavirus wild type.

15 to 21 times that of beta.

If one looks at the

delta

mutation, the number of titers in

18 to 55-year-olds

increases

five-fold

, in

65 to 85-year-olds

it is around

Corona booster vaccination: Experts have been skeptical so far - is the third dose really needed?

Biontech / Pfizer have already submitted applications for approval to the US FDA and the European Medicines Agency. The proceedings are ongoing, discussions are ongoing, Pfizer said. Clinical studies must be submitted again here.

However, experts, including the EMA, have so far been cautious.

In view of the available data, it is still too early to decide whether and when to take a third dose.

The vaccination campaigns in the various countries and recent studies have not yet provided enough information on this.

The chairman of the WHO's Corona Emergency Committee also warned that booster vaccinations could “exacerbate inequality in access to vaccines” by depriving countries of doses that are now barely able to vaccinate people for the first time.

Other countries, such as France or Israel, are already giving third doses to people with poor immunity.

Corona booster vaccination: what is the situation in Germany?

- Young, healthy adults are unlikely to need a third dose

Health Minister Jens Spahn said in mid-July: Third vaccinations for people with a declining immune system or old age make sense.

As Biontech / Pfizer shows with the new data, the protection for “low responders” is significantly higher with a third vaccination.

“Low responders” are people whose immune system only reacts to the double vaccination with a rather low level of protection.

Spahn mainly included nursing home residents and other people who would have to reckon with a serious disease course with coronavirus infection.

"That is why we will probably offer these groups the third vaccination in September or October," said Spahn.

Basically, it is important to distinguish that the protective effect of the vaccine decreases after six months, but "the vaccination protection against severe courses remains high," according to Biontech / Pfizer.

"The 30-year-old healthy, twice vaccinated person probably does not need this booster," stressed Spahn with regard to a booster vaccination
