Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed today that the military activities of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the buildup of its forces near the Russian border will force Moscow to take retaliatory measures to protect its security.
Last Monday, NATO began large-scale exercises called "Agil Spirit 2021" in Georgia, with the participation of 21 member states of the alliance, in addition to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine.
"This is new proof that NATO is spreading its military infrastructure around our borders, not only around our borders, but has come into contact with them," TASS news agency quoted Peskov as saying.
He added: "This matter prompts us to monitor the situation very carefully and take the necessary measures and measures to ensure the security of the country, and this is what President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu have talked about on several occasions, in addition to Russian representatives at various levels."
On the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Peskov said: “We know that the situation worsened yesterday on the Armenian-Azerbaijan border, and as you know, the Russian side made great efforts to restore the ceasefire, and work is still going on in this field.”
He added, "Moscow is following up its contacts with Yerevan and Baku in order to ensure the full implementation of the tripartite agreements."
