Pedro Castillo took office as the new president of Peru after a campaign and elections that have exacerbated polarization and the already constant ups and downs of the Andean country in recent years.

Therefore, recovering the stability of the country, hit hard by the pandemic and going through a deep economic crisis, must be the main short-term objective of the new president and all the opposition must also contribute to this.

The first signals Castillo has given are, however, somewhat confusing. The president decided at the last minute, shortly before taking office, to postpone the appointment of his Cabinet and its number two, scheduled for this Wednesday, also a symbolic date for celebrating the bicentennial of the independence of the Andean country. Castillo is undoubtedly receiving strong pressure from the leader of his party, Vladimir Cerrón. Maintaining an independence from Cerrón, who, unlike Castillo, has not tempered his radical messages, will surely mark the course of the next government. In social matters, the contradictions and ambiguity that have arisen regarding gender equality and LGTBI rights are of concern.

In his first speech, he emphasized the need to strengthen access to healthcare for all Peruvians. The new president faces a major challenge. Peru has been one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in Latin America, becoming the one with the highest number of deaths per inhabitant in the world. Although thanks to the work of Francisco Sagasti, who has served as president in a notable way in recent months, it has been possible to carry out a dignified vaccination process, there is still a long way to go. As throughout the world, the pandemic has shaken the economy, to the point of increasing poverty by 10%. Castillo did well to emphasize during his first speech that he will not take any measure that scares investment or nationalize the economy.Increasing the budget with a new tax on mining companies, as the future Minister of Economy intends, seems complicated to the extent that it will require a negotiation with the mining businessmen, who unconditionally supported Keiko Fujimori in the campaign and after the vote in your allegations of fraud.

Sewing a deeply divided country after the elections, which left unproven accusations of deception on the part of Fujimori, should also be one of the short-term objectives of Pedro Castillo, who has achieved a legitimate, internationally recognized victory, as confirmed by the presence of various authorities, including the King of Spain.

Despite the anger generated by the right-wing opposition, Castillo must also show that he wants a rapprochement and that he will govern without the revenge or revanchism that some of his faithful enact, with his sights set on the whole country, also on those who they turned their backs on him. It will be up to them to assume and respect that, just on Peru's bicentennial, a rural teacher legitimately became president of a country that, historically, has marginalized sectors that he represents.
