Reactions to Simon Bales' Retirement from Reuters

Did the case of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse influence Simon Bailes' decision to retire from the team competition final and the multi-fight final at the Tokyo Olympics? There are those in the American delegation who are convinced that they are.

Bailes continues to maintain ambiguity about the circumstances that led to her extraordinary decision and has not yet made a final decision on whether to compete in the individual professions and still try to win a personal medal in Tokyo, but last night (Wednesday) echoed on social media a message from former coach and gymnast Andrea Oris. That the difficult circumstances of her life - including the sexual abuse case of team doctor Larry Nassar - were part of the unusual move.

"It disappoints me so much to read the reactions of people who claim that Simon Bales is not mentally strong, or has given up too easily. We are talking here about the same girl who was harassed by her doctor for years, from childhood, and still became a legend. Simon is only 24, but past. "Traumatic events that most people will not experience for the rest of their lives," Oris wrote.

"After everything she's been through, she's still judged so harshly. How can you say that Mark is weak in character? That she's soft-spoken? It's absurd."

Bales retweeted and shared Auris' post, and a senior member of the American gymnastics delegation told the Daily Mail that "the very fact that Simon echoed this post proves how much she agrees with every word in it. This post sums up everything Simon feels and wants to say for herself. She is still living the trauma of that affair, and other childhood traumas. "

Bales revealed in 2018 that she too was sexually harassed for years by Nassar, who assaulted many girls while serving as a doctor on the American gymnastics team. More than 100 boys and girls testified against Nassar, who was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison following the affair.

"I am no longer afraid to tell my story. I too am one of the survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar, now I know it is not my fault," Bales wrote at the time. "It's not normal to get 'special treatment' from the doctor you were told to trust. I do not intend to bear the blame that belongs to Nassar and the American Association."

Bales' relationship with the American Gymnastics Association has seen ups and downs, in part against the backdrop of the handling of the affair.

A statement from the union said yesterday: "After further medical evaluation, Simon Bailes retired from the final battle to concentrate on her mental condition. Simon will continue to undergo evaluation on a daily basis and then it will be decided if she will participate in the individual professions." The courage to prioritize her health.

This courage proves once again why she is a role model for so many people. "
