The first results of an environmental analysis are to be presented today.

Leverkusen - Three days after the huge explosion in the Leverkusen Chempark, the result of an analysis of the substances released is getting closer and closer.

After the detonation, a gigantic cloud of smoke had risen and also passed over residential areas.

The North Rhine-Westphalian State Environment Agency (LANUV) entrusted with the investigation has initially promised a corresponding report "probably at the end of the week".

The first results will now be announced at a press conference on Friday afternoon (July 30th).

After the explosion in a waste incineration plant, tanks burned on Tuesday (July 27) in the Chempark in Leverkusen, in which, according to the operating company Currenta, “organic solvents” were stored. “This is a class of solvents that simply accumulates as residues in chemistry,” explained Chempark manager Lars Friedrich. After the fire, many small soot particles fell in Leverkusen. The city advised its citizens, among other things, not to eat fruit or vegetables from the garden if the dust has accumulated on them.

In an initial assessment, the LANUV assumed that it could have been "dioxin, PCB and furan compounds" that were carried into surrounding residential areas via the cloud of smoke.

Basically, every fire incident produces dioxins in more or less high concentrations.

How much the existing residues are contaminated with these substances will only be shown after the extensive evaluation.
