The government food safety department today (30th) announced two investigations related to food problems.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health stated that after cooking and eating mushrooms purchased at Beverly Garden Market in Tseung Kwan O, a woman was suspected to have symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain; therefore, the public is advised to obtain reliable supplies. Merchants who buy mushrooms should not buy mushrooms that are suspected of being mixed with unknown varieties.

The Centre for Food Safety also today urged the public not to consume two types of baby rice cereal imported from Australia, including Bubs Organic’s Baby Rice Cereal and Baby Banana Rice Cereal.

The authorities said that the above-mentioned products were detected by the Singapore Food Authority as a metal impurity (arsenic), which exceeded the local legal standard. Therefore, the importer is now recalling the batch of products.

Woman with mushroom poisoning has been discharged from hospital

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health stated that today it is investigating a suspected case of food poisoning after eating mushrooms.

The case involved a 45-year-old woman.

She cooked and ate mushrooms purchased from the Fukang Garden Market in Tseung Kwan O yesterday (29th). She developed nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain about 1 hour later.

The patient sought medical treatment at Tseung Kwan O Hospital on the same day and was discharged. He is in stable condition.

The Centre for Health Protection stated that the investigation is continuing and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has been notified of the incident.

A spokesperson for the centre said that food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms is generally acute.

Symptoms usually include intestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain within a short period of time after eating.

Depending on different mushroom species, patients may also experience profuse sweating, hallucinations, coma or other neurological symptoms and liver failure. In severe cases, death is more likely to occur.

The spokesman added that since it is difficult for the public to distinguish whether mushrooms are suitable for consumption, they should buy mushrooms from reputable and reliable suppliers. They should not buy mushrooms that are suspected of being mixed with unknown species, and they should not pick wild mushrooms for consumption.

In addition, if the edible mushroom varieties are mixed, the inedible and toxic mushroom varieties will not dilute the toxicity. In most cases, cooking will not reduce the toxicity.

The spokesman also pointed out that if members of the public suspect food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms, they should seek medical advice immediately.

If there are remaining mushrooms, you should take them to seek medical advice for identification.

The Centre for Food Safety also today urged members of the public not to consume two types of baby rice cereal imported from Australia because the products may contain metallic impurities called arsenic.

If the industry holds the affected products, they should stop using or selling them immediately.

The product information is as follows:

Arsenic content detected in Singapore exceeds local legal standards

The spokesman pointed out that through the food incident monitoring system, the center was informed that the Food Authority of Singapore issued a notice stating that the above-mentioned product was found to contain arsenic, a metal impurity, which exceeded the local legal standard and is undergoing recycling.

Upon learning of the incident, the center immediately contacted major local importers and retailers to follow up.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the above-mentioned exclusive importer had imported some of the affected products, and the investigation is still continuing.

For the sake of prudence, the importer is now recalling the batch of products.

If members of the public want to inquire about the recall of the above products, they can call the importer's hotline 3168 6551 during office hours.

The spokesman also urged members of the public to stop eating the affected products.

If the industry holds the relevant products, they should stop using or selling them immediately.
