People in the northern countryside of Salamiyah in Hama governorate are active during this period of the year to harvest the wild caper plant, which spreads extensively and spontaneously in the lands and pastures of the region, and is waiting for its season annually as it is one of the most financially feasible productive seasons because it is a plant that grows naturally and does not need services or supplies.

To learn more about the economic importance of this plant and the way it is harvested and prepared, Sana visited the village of Zagrine, which is famous for its production and its pound. She met with a number of farmers, including Nofal Younis, who is responsible for a workshop for picking capers. The grave that was created recently for this purpose by one of the residents of Zagrine, where graves are stored and sold to merchants.

Ramadan Muhammad is responsible for the Qabar Center in the village of Zagrine. He indicated that the kabar, which is also called in the local dialect “Shafallah”, is received at prices ranging between 7000 and 8000 Syrian pounds per kilogram, in addition to purchasing the crop directly from the workshops. After receiving the crop, it is sifted and sorted according to the size Its grains are then placed in special barrels containing salted water to be pressed for several days until it becomes pickled, after which it is delivered to merchants to be sold in the markets.

Muhammad explained that the yield of one dunum of capers is equivalent to 7 dunums of pistachio trees in terms of the price of the product, which made it an important source of material income for many families and people in the area.

The agricultural engineer, Nayef Al-Hamwi, director of the agricultural department in Salamiyah, pointed out that the caper is a small drought-resistant plant that produces large white pink flowers and green berries and contains a large amount of seeds. It is one of the best pastures for bees to produce honey and has many medical benefits, indicating that the harvest season continues until The month of August and one person can harvest about 4 kg per day.

Al-Hamawi pointed out that the caper plant grows naturally in the wild lands when temperatures rise and spreads in peaceful lands and areas on a large scale due to the nature of its land and its suitable climate, indicating that the people of the region pick it and sell it to owners of marketing centers and then market it to traders for canning and exporting, as it constitutes a source of attraction. For beekeepers who flock from different regions to take advantage of the nectar of the flowers of this plant, which constitutes a major food beloved by bees.
