The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, reported this Thursday that those over 12 will be vaccinated against covid-19.

According to the president, the legal representatives of the adolescents must schedule the appointment through a portal enabled by the government.

Until now, the government had estimated that it would vaccinate 4.5 million Salvadorans over 18 years of age, out of a population of more than six million inhabitants.

"We have the scientific evidence to be able to qualify the age group above 12 years to the vaccine against covid-19," said Francisco Alabí, Minister of Health of El Salvador, through a tweet.

The government's announcement comes at a time when, according to official figures, positive cases of covid-19 and deaths related to the virus have increased.

On July 27, the authorities reported 280 new cases, when at the beginning of June between 125 and 150 new infections were registered per day.

Regarding deaths related to the virus, the government reported that 12 people died on July 28, when at the beginning of June the average number of deaths was between four and five people.

El Salvador reports a total of 86,059 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 2,599 people died from causes related to the virus.

According to health authorities, to date 1,457,048 people have completed their vaccination schedule with two doses and 2,710,883 have one dose.
