Median waiting time for psychiatric services in Hong Kong West Network is 50 weeks

The Chief Administrative Manager (Quality and Standards) of the Hospital Authority, Liu Jiaxian, said that the waiting time for this season's update is roughly the same as the last one. Some specialties have improved, including New Territories West Internal Medicine, Hong Kong Island East and Kowloon Middle Otolaryngology.

He said that some networked specialist clinics use a special remuneration plan to increase the number of evening and weekend sessions, and the service has been more than before the epidemic.

The waiting time for stable new cases of psychiatric clinics in Hong Kong West, Kowloon East and New Territories West has all increased significantly. Among them, the Hong Kong Island West Network has soared by 24 weeks, and the median waiting time is as long as 50 weeks.

The waiting time for stable new ophthalmology cases in New Territories East and New Territories West also increased by more than 10 weeks, with a median of 47 weeks and 31 weeks respectively.

Liu Jiaxian explained that during the outbreak of the epidemic, the Hospital Authority adjusted some of its services, and some patients "did off" to see the doctor as scheduled. Recently, the epidemic has gradually come under control, and many patients have made appointments for a new period, resulting in an increase in waiting time.

He also said that the waiting time for different networks is affected by factors such as population, age distribution, and doctor's resignation, emphasizing that patients can freely choose any network to see the doctor.

Liu Jiaxian said frankly that the waiting time for the otolaryngology department is relatively long and the situation is not ideal.

The Hospital Authority then set up "ENT Specialist Polyclinics" in Hong Kong Island West, Kowloon West and New Territories East Cluster last year to screen patients over 60 years of age with hearing problems.

After being referred, patients need to go to the clinic for physical examination and hearing tests. If hearing problems are found due to physical deterioration, they can be directly equipped with hearing aids, and they only need to wait a few weeks.

Nurses, physiotherapists and audiologists can provide immediate assistance, that is, stable patients do not necessarily need to see a doctor, unless in a more urgent situation.

The three networked "ENT specialist polyclinics" have seen more than 3,000 new patients in six months. Liu Jiaxian believes that the clinics have shortened the overall waiting time by several weeks.

The clinics in the Hong Kong Island East and Kowloon East Cluster will be put into service in October this year, and the clinics in the Kowloon Central and New Territories West Cluster will also be opened next year.
