"unduly detained"

, activists announced Thursday, July 29, while the prosecution issued an arrest warrant against the one who would be the 30th opponent stopped.

For its part, the public prosecutor said that he had asked a judge for

against the former head of diplomacy, and that this Thursday this request had been accepted,

. Francisco Aguirre, a 76-year-old economist and political analyst, is under investigation for

"allegedly committing acts undermining the independence, sovereignty and self-determination of Nicaragua,"

by publicly inciting to

"Foreign interference in internal affairs"

, according to the prosecution. He is also accused of celebrating

"the imposition of sanctions against theState of Nicaragua and its citizens ”

, allusion to some 130 international sanctions adopted since 2018 against officials and relatives of President Ortega for human rights violations.

With Francisco Aguirre, 30 opponents have now been arrested since June, while the presidential election is being held on November 7, for which Daniel Ortega should apply for re-election, according to his supporters.

Among those arrested are seven presidential aspirants: Cristiana Chamorro, Arturo Cruz, Félix Maradiaga, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Miguel Mora, Medardo Mairena and Noel Vidaurre, as well as three ex-guerrillas critical of the government, and figures of the opposition.

Francisco Aguirre was Nicaraguan Ambassador to the United States and then head of diplomacy under President Arnoldo Alemán (1997-2002). He also worked at the World Bank and criticized the policies of Daniel Ortega, in power since 2007. Last February, Parliament, in the hands of the ruling party, approved a penal reform that allows authorities to detain, until to 90 days, those under investigation for a crime. Previously, it was three days.
