Saxon Vaccination Commission recommends vaccination for children from the age of twelve

While the Standing Vaccination Commission only advises against corona vaccines from the age of 18, there is a new decision in Saxony. The reason is data from the USA and Israel - as well as the "extremely dynamic" development of the pandemic.

The Saxon Vaccination Commission (Siko) has changed its recommendation: It now recommends general corona vaccinations for children from the age of twelve.

The recommendation applies from Sunday, as Siko announced on Friday.

So far, the recommendation in Saxony only applied to children aged 16 and over.

For twelve to 15-year-olds, vaccination has so far only been recommended in the state for certain risk factors and chronic diseases that are associated with an increased risk of a severe or fatal course of the Sars-CoV-2 infection.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has so far only recommended corona vaccinations between the ages of twelve and 17 for adolescents with certain previous illnesses or, if requested, for individual medical advice.

The Stiko refers to the so far sparse data situation.

However, there were repeated calls from politicians to recommend the corona vaccination for all adolescents from the age of twelve.

Such demands outraged him, said Stiko commissioner Martin Terhardt the broadcaster RBB.

He expressed the expectation that there would be a new Stiko recommendation in this matter in a few weeks.

Data from the USA and Israel were analyzed

The Saxon Vaccination Commission justified the change in its vaccination recommendation with the "extremely dynamic development of the coronavirus pandemic" and the growing level of knowledge about vaccinations. The general vaccination recommendation for children and adolescents between the ages of twelve and 15 has included data from the USA and Israel. "Here the benefit clearly outweighs the risk of adverse reactions," Siko explained. Adverse reactions are possible side effects.

Siko therefore paid particular attention to the occurrence of cardiac muscle inflammation in connection with corona vaccinations.

In male adolescents in the age group from twelve to 17 years, a frequency of up to 70 diseases per million fully vaccinated can be expected.

At the same time, two deaths and 71 intensive treatments due to Covid-19 and 5700 corona infections would be prevented in this age group.

In female vaccinees, the frequency of myocarditis is around ten out of a million fully vaccinated people with prevention of one death and 38 intensive treatments through Covid-19, explained the Saxon Vaccination Commission.

It is the only state vaccination commission of its kind in Germany.

The EU drug authority EMA has so far approved the corona vaccines from the company Biontech / Pfizer and the US manufacturer Moderna for young people between the ages of twelve and 17.
