In Hong Kong's first national security law case, the defendant Tang Yingjie was sentenced to 9 years in prison on July 30 for inciting others to split the country and terrorist activities.
The European Union and the United States criticized the trial and accused the Chinese government of using the National Security Law to suppress Hong Kong people.
A spokesperson for the US State Department criticized that the trial ensured an unfair outcome, and worried that Chinese officials would use the National Security Act as a political weapon to eliminate dissent in Hong Kong and suppress the rights and fundamental freedoms of Hong Kong people.
Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for EU foreign and security policy, said that the National Security Law is used to stifle Hong Kong’s political diversity and exercise the right to human rights and political freedom.
She urged that the arrest of pan-democrats and those who defend rights, freedom and democratic values should be stopped.
