Joe Biden hardens the tone on the vaccine and the mask but it comes up against part of the opposition.


America has become a melee.

And the Covid one of the subjects where the clinch between parties and factions is particularly intense.

Some, especially Democrats, see vaccination as a matter of life and death.

The others, especially Republicans, make it a matter of principle and fundamental freedom, consider that the vaccine remains experimental and therefore refuse any pressure from the Administration on this subject.

Aware of these deep fault lines, and of the fact that the federal state in principle has no real prerogatives in matters of health, an area over which states and local authorities have the upper hand, Joe Biden had been up to here in no hurry to put in place sharp rules on vaccination, preferring persuasion.

But on Thursday, the US president, in a somewhat Macronian turn, toughened his tone to announce that federal employees would be forced to get vaccinated, or be subjected to bi-weekly and port tests.
