The attack on the ship owned by the Israeli businessman, Eyal Ofer, was carried out by a suicide UAV and apparently other UAVs, an American source told the AP news agency today (Friday).
He added that it was not clear at this stage who was behind it.
In addition, Middle East officials familiar with the attack on the ship said that "from the information we have had two attacks on the ship named 'Mercer Street' one in the morning and one on Thursday evening. There is no verification that these are Iranians. This is just an estimate."

"It should be noted that this is a Japanese-owned ship operated by a British company owned by a very well-known Israeli citizen. One attack was missed and one hit. As far as we know, this is an unmanned aircraft attack. "This is no longer a signal or an attempt to convey a message. The dead are a different story," they added.
The attack killed two crew members, a British and a Romanian in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman, according to the "Zodiac Maritime" company, which operates the ship and is owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. Earlier, the UK Department of Defense announced the attack, adding that it was still investigating the incident reported by the UK Maritime Trade Service.
The Zodiac Maritime Company claimed that it was the Mercer Street oil tanker, which sailed under the Liberian flag and is Japanese-owned.
The company added that the attack was carried out by pirates, while on its way from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, without a cargo on board.
At this time the ship sails under the control of its crew to a safe place.
