New Delhi-SANA
Indian authorities announced today that 11 people have died in the east of the country after heavy rains washed away homes and caused landslides, bringing the death toll from the monsoon rains to more than 230 people in the country.
The disaster management minister in West Bengal, Javed Khan, was quoted by AFP as saying that the rains that swept the state caused great damage and led to the death of four people from electrocution, while seven people died when their house was flooded and others are still missing.
Dozens of cars were submerged in the neighboring state of Jharkhand after five consecutive days of heavy rain. Experts believe that weather fluctuations contribute to the monsoon rains that fall annually in India from June to September.
Earlier this month, the western state of Maharashtra was hit by torrential rains and landslides that flooded villages in mud, killing at least 200 people.
