Frog, jumping jack, fish.

If you think of your first strolls, these words ring out in your ears.

Not all children in the Isarwinkel currently have the opportunity to learn to swim.

The demand is much higher than the supply.

Lenggries

- In the past, everyone had passed it in elementary school at the latest and proudly sewed their swimming trunks.

Now it seems to be a rarity among children in the Isarwinkel: the seahorse.

There are no longer any vacancies for swimming courses in Lenggries.

Sabine Gerg (SPD), youth officer of the Lenggries Council, is now trying - after consultation with the community - to increase the capacity for children's courses.

While 70 children are currently taking swimming lessons in Lenggries and the surrounding area, 55 children are still on the waiting list.

Ascending trend.

"As before, many parents contact me and want to register their child for a swimming course," says Gerg.

Seahorse is on the "Red List"

The reason why the situation has worsened in recent years is not least due to the pandemic. Because: "Many who have started a swimming course could not finish it due to the first lockdown and now need a refresher." Furthermore, in the course of the crisis, many children did not even begin to learn to swim and now waiting for a course. And then there would be those children who would start according to their age anyway.

“There are even a lot of children born in 2011 or 2012 on the waiting lists,” says Gerg, emphasizing the unfortunate situation.

“You have to say that there are also many children from refugee families in this age group.” However, this does little to change the problem.

“There are many rivers and lakes in the area.

Being able to swim is therefore not just a fun and sports factor, but a really necessary skill, ”emphasizes Gerg.

In a press release, the SPD in Lenggries wants to draw attention to the fact that swimming instructors are urgently needed to cope with the rush.

Because Gerg, herself a mother of two children, also knows: “When parents want to teach their own children something like this, it usually doesn't work out so well.

Children are more likely to accept this from strangers with fun. "

Lack of swimming instructors and space

But there is also a lack of bathrooms. In the cooperation with local councilor Anton Leeb (CSU), advisor for bathing establishments, one has already made “good progress”, according to Gerg in an official press release. When asked, she explained that, for example, earlier opening times of the Alpenwelle could be negotiated for the courses. Now everything is about to acquire more teachers. There is also a lack of swimming opportunities. Therefore, Gerg would find the possibility "charming" if private pool owners could make their pools available. How the whole thing would then be implemented has not yet been finally discussed. So far nobody has reported with a private pool.
