On Saturday morning nothing works on many highways in Bavaria.

The A8 in particular has already suffered a traffic blackout.

Columns of holidaymakers push their way south at walking pace.

Munich - Full roads all over Bavaria: On the A8 in the direction of Salzburg *, long traffic jams have been building up since the morning, as a spokesman for the police in Upper Bavaria says.

Between Holzkirchen and the border to Austria, drivers sometimes drive from traffic jam to traffic jam.

According to the real-time traffic monitoring of the automobile club ADAC, there were traffic jams of up to 24 kilometers.

The traffic volume increased noticeably on Friday night.

Traffic jam after the start of the vacation in Bavaria: A8 completely sealed - accidents and controls

"It's full, there have been accidents and there are controls at the border," said one police officer.

A broken down vehicle is enough to cause long delays in tourist traffic.

Nobody was injured in the accidents on Saturday morning.

As the last of the 16 federal states, just under 1.64 million students were sent on summer vacation in Bavaria on Thursday.

Wednesday was the last day of school in Baden-Württemberg.

Traffic chaos on highways in Bavaria: Corona intensifies the effect

The effect is intensified by Corona, warns the ADAC.

On the one hand, the desire to travel is huge, on the other hand, the number of infections is skyrocketing in many holiday countries.

So many would rely on travel destinations that can be reached by car.

There are also controls at the borders.

In Austria, proof of vaccination or a valid Corona * test is still required upon entry.

Travelers to Croatia or Italy should also be warned: traffic is currently increasing noticeably on the classic routes to the south in Austria, South Tyrol, Slovenia and Croatia.

It accumulates at the burner.

But especially the Upper Bavaria-Croatia route is hopelessly overloaded.

Traffic chaos continues in Austria - and in Slovenia - and in Croatia

On Saturday morning, the ÖAMTC reported a total of around 60 kilometers of traffic jams on the 340-kilometer route from Munich to the Slovenian border at the Karawanken tunnel.

At the Karawanken tunnel itself, the whole vacation sheet avalanche condenses even more.

Around 15 kilometers of traffic jams are currently being reported.

Waiting time: about two hours.

In addition, there are police controls at the Slovenian border crossing, which take around an hour, reports the ÖAMTC currently.

Anyone who then thinks they have the worst behind them after the ordeal at border crossings and tunnels should also be warned: the Croatian transport service HAK is currently reporting traffic jams on all motorways.

It is particularly dense around Zagreb and towards Istria.

In Swabia, traffic on the A7 also increased in the north in the morning.

Return travelers are on the way.

While the summer holidays begin in southern Germany, school will soon start again in northern Europe, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
