Samaritans: 1,019 people died by suicide last year, the highest number of suicide deaths among the elderly in 28 years

The Samaritan Suicide Prevention Association of Hong Kong announced today (31st) that the number of suicide deaths in Hong Kong last year was 1,019, a slight increase from previous years. The number of suicide deaths among elderly people over 60 was 438, the highest in 28 years.

The association believes that due to the impact of the epidemic and the economy, coupled with the lack of social distancing due to social distancing measures, the public is likely to accumulate pressure.

The Samaritan Suicide Prevention Association of Hong Kong announced that the number of suicides in Hong Kong last year was 1,019, that is, 13.61 suicides per 100,000 people, an average of 2.79 cases per day, an overall increase of 26 cases over the previous year.

Among them, 62% were males and 38% were females; 50% fell from a height, and 25% hanged themselves.

Last year, there were 438 suicide deaths among elders over the age of 60, accounting for 43% of the total deaths, an increase of 4.8% over the previous year, the highest number since the record in 1973.
