“O zapft is'” - after a compulsory year break, something has been stirring again on the Thomawiese in Dachau since last Saturday.

In the beer garden on Saturday Christian Glas tapped the first barrel of beer for “Summer on the Thomawiese” with just three strokes.

He had bought this privilege at auction.

Because instead of seeing the mayor on the Schlegel, as is usually the case, the beer garden guests applaud the chairman of the Morning Man Mike fan club, who skillfully and entertainingly tapped the first barrel and then diligently poured it out.

Glas had obtained this privilege thanks to the generous donations of his friends, association members and family members.

825 euros were collected in this way.

The campaign in favor of the Dachau Animal Welfare Association was launched by the host Ewald Zechner and his team on social media (we reported).

Here the tapping could, so to speak, be auctioned.

Because: Lord Mayor Florian Hartmann, who actually deserves the privilege of tapping, married his Julia on the same day and was of course prevented from doing so.

Instead of the concert for the entry into the folk festival, this year there was a concert on Rathausplatz for the wedding of the mayor.

The Dachau fire brigade stood with an orange hose on a trellis.

The tapping should actually have been moderated by the well-known radio presenter Sascha Seelemann, who, however, was excused due to illness.

However, that was not particularly noticeable, because the Ludwig Thoma musicians, Christian Glas and also Ewald Zechner provided the necessary entertainment.

After the start, the breweries rounded the amount up to 1,000 euros and VR-Bank Dachau even doubled the amount to a proud 2,000 euros.

The check was received by Thomas Höbel, treasurer at the Dachau Animal Welfare Association.

Especially now with the construction of the new multifunctional building, the animal shelter could use the money very well, said Höbel.

Volksfestreferent Robert Gasteiger and Festwirt Ewald Zechner thanked District Administrator Stefan Löwl for his support.

Especially for the fact that he “worked enormously” for the Sommerwiesn and “always supported us very, very much”, as Zechner emphasized.

In addition to the beer garden area, which can only be visited with registration, there is also a separate area with rides and stalls.

Here you can only come to the site with proof of vaccination, test or recovery in connection with an identity card and mask.

A test station is available for guests.

The rides are mainly intended for the little Sommerwiesn visitors.

The food offer is also reduced.

Nevertheless, the concept has so far been well received by the Dachau residents.

After a rather poor number of visitors at the tapping, the guests flocked to the Thomawiese in large numbers in the late afternoon and evening.

Including many families and many women and men in traditional costumes and with beaming faces.

For many Dachau residents, it's still a folk festival - even if it's called differently this year and is a bit smaller.
