The Stiko recommends vaccinations for 12 to 17 year olds only to a limited extent. The Ministry of Health now wants to offer them to them anyway. There will also be a third dose for certain people.

The Federal Ministry of Health wants to offer corona vaccination offers to 12 to 17 year olds in all federal states.

This emerges from a draft resolution of the conference of health ministers next Monday, which is available to SPIEGEL.

"Bild am Sonntag" and the dpa news agency had previously reported on it.

"Corresponding medical information and, if necessary, the consent of the guardians are ensured," says the draft.

Sufficient vaccination doses from Biontech and Moderna are available to enable all approximately 4.5 million 12 to 17 year olds in Germany to be vaccinated immediately.

Offer in vaccination centers

"All countries will now offer vaccinations for 12 to 17-year-olds in the vaccination centers," writes the ministry in the draft sent to the federal states.

Resident doctors and company doctors who vaccinated relatives could also be involved.

In some countries, vaccination campaigns are already planned in schools, for example.

The vaccination rate in adults had recently slowed down.

The European Medicines Agency (Ema) approved the Covid-19 vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer for children and adolescents from the age of twelve in May, and the approval for Moderna followed a few days ago.

For Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) has so far only recommended vaccination to children and adolescents with certain pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or obesity, who are at increased risk of a severe course, despite intense political pressure.

The reasons given by the Stiko were a lack of data on the safety of the vaccine.

The vaccination recommendation can only be updated if meaningful data is available for this age group on the risk from the vaccination and the risk from the Corona variant Delta, Stiko chairman Thomas Mertens recently emphasized.

For young adults, the federal states should make "low-threshold offers" in universities, vocational schools and schools, according to the draft resolution for Monday.

"This can make a significant contribution to a safer start to teaching and learning after the summer vacation."

Children and young people make up around ten percent of the total population.

Your vaccination is essential for achieving herd immunity.

Since the delta variant is currently spreading rapidly among the unprotected, younger population group, many are pressing for a swift vaccination of children and adolescents - especially in view of the school openings after the summer holidays.

Booster vaccinations for certain groups from September

For certain groups, the Federal Ministry of Health also proposes booster vaccinations against the coronavirus from September.

Initial study results indicated that they could experience reduced or rapidly declining protection after vaccination, according to the draft.

"This applies in particular to the group of relevant immunocompromised patients as well as to very old people and those in need of care."

According to the draft, the federal states should therefore send mobile vaccination teams to care facilities, among other places.

People with an immune deficiency or in home care should therefore be offered a booster vaccination by their doctors.

»The booster vaccinations are carried out with one of the two mRNA vaccines;

It is irrelevant which vaccine the person was previously vaccinated with, «it says.

Anyone who has already been fully vaccinated with a vector vaccine from AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson will also be offered a further vaccination with the mRNA vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer.
