Italy looks into reforming its justice system

Parliamentarians have begun examining an overhaul of the judicial system aimed at making it more efficient.

She responds to Italian magistrates and opponents worried about seeing their judicial system become too hasty by canceling too long trials. Rome is overhauling its judicial system to make it faster and more efficient. This revision of the criminal procedures strongly desired by the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, provides in particular for the suspension of the limitation period after the first sentence and the limitation to two and one year of the duration of the trials in appeal and cassation. The examination of the text began Sunday in the Chamber of Deputies. The Council presidency has promised to call for a vote of confidence later this week.

It took weeks for the various parties supporting the former European central banker to come to an agreement.

The compromise provides that judges can request an extension of up to three years on appeal
