Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui may give people a complex feeling of character, but after in-depth understanding, you will find that Chungking Mansions has many unique cultures.

Recently, a group held photography and creative writing exhibitions in the building, hoping to attract more people willing to step into Chungking Mansions, learn about these minorities living in Hong Kong, and redefine "Hong Kong people" from a dietary perspective.

The photography and writing exhibition held at Chungking Mansions is a product of the "be/longing project" and is co-organized by Rongle Club and former Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor Chen Jialang.

The exhibition mainly explores the daily cooking traditions of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and shares their food culture, allowing participants to have a more inclusive definition of "Hong Kong people". It will be held at Chungking Mansions from today (No. 1) to No. 22 Exhibited underground.

The exhibition was prepared by two Filipino girls from the University of Hong Kong, together with ethnic minority youths living in Hong Kong from 6 different countries, and the restaurant of Chungking Mansions. The whole preparation process took six months and different tasks were also provided. Workshops, such as photography classes, and allowing them to visit the restaurant many times, help curators to master relevant skills and knowledge.

The main curators of the exhibition are Christine and Ericka, Filipino girls who were born and raised in Hong Kong.

Ericka said that the purpose of the exhibition is to attract citizens to Chungking Mansions and encourage them to try various flavors of food in the restaurants in the building.

Erika believes that food is the basic need of everyone. Especially in Hong Kong, people always like to say "I have not eaten a meal?" when greeting others. Therefore, she believes that dining is one of the bridges of communication between people.

She said that Hong Kong has always had a diversified food culture and believes that Hong Kong is a place where people from different races can be integrated, and that ethnic minorities should not be stereotyped.

Christine does not want a single culture in Hong Kong, and believes that minorities constitute part of Hong Kong's culture.

She pointed out that one of the pictures on display is composed of banana leaves, chopsticks and siu mai. Banana leaves are from the Philippines, and chopsticks and siu mai are from Hong Kong, but they will appear in Hong Kong at the same time, and these are Hong Kong's dietary elements.

Just like the identity of Hong Kong people, it should not be limited to a single characteristic. As long as people live in Hong Kong, they are also a part of it.

Zheng Yuxi, the representative of Rongle Club, pointed out that this exhibition was from a community planning competition jointly organized by Rongle Club and the five district councilors, from which ten different winning projects were selected to be carried out in the community.

He said that most people in Hong Kong have stereotypes about ethnic minorities and think that they are a group of recipients, which isolates them, but in fact they also hope to help and change the community.

Zheng Yuxi hopes that through the activities, the inherent views of the public can be reversed, so that more mainstream organizations can see the efforts of ethnic minorities as the community and reconstruct the identity of Hong Kong people from food.
