The emotion of the Italian Tamberi and the Qatari Barshim hugging and celebrating gold together was one of the most outstanding images of this Sunday at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo.

The Italian Gianmarco Tamberi and the Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim agreed to share the medal, in a fact that has not been registered in athletics at the Olympic Games in 113 years of competition.

Both athletes

achieved the best mark of 2.37 meters

in High Jump, without prior nulls, so the judge approached both of them and said: "You can continue jumping to tie the tie."

Tamberi🇮🇹 and Barshim🇶🇦 had equalized in high jump.

They ask them if they want to tie the tie or share the gold.

To which the Qatari athlete replied: "If not, is the gold for both of us?"

Before the judge's affirmative, Mutaz and Gianmarco agreed, avoided continuing to jump and embraced with an image that will be recorded forever.

Then came the delirium, the wild celebration of both, and of course, also the tears.

The silver medal was vacated and Belarusian Maksim Nedasekau completed the podium with the bronze.

An image that shook the world.

The three athletes reached 2.37 meters, but

failed in the search for the Olympic record

held by the American Charles Austin with the 2.39 obtained in Atlanta 1996.

The unique thing is that both Tamberi and Barshim had finished on perfect equality.

In addition to the exciting gesture with his colleague, the Italian starred in a particular celebration as he

exhibited a plaster with the phrase "Road to Tokyo 2020-2021"

, in reference to the injury that marginalized him from the Rio Games in 2016.

The Qatari Barshim, 30, completed his collection of medals after winning bronze in London 2012 and silver in Rio 2016.
