Seventy-one kilos of marijuana, hashish and cocaine were discovered by the financial police during a raid in the cemetery of Giarre (Catania). Two people, both originally from Acireale, arrested in the act of crime: AT, aged 55, who worked as a volunteer cemetery keeper, and FS, aged 43. Twenty kilos of 'skunk' marijuana and one of hashish were hidden in an empty niche located about three meters high. Another 20 kilos of marijuana were in the possession of the 43-year-old; another 30 kilos were in storage. Hidden on the two arrested, the military found 300 grams of cocaine.
The operation was born from an intensification of anti-drug services in the province of Catania, with particular reference to the towns of Riposto and Giarre.
The investigations were concentrated in the area of the Giarre cemetery, the subject of some reports regarding suspicious movements, especially at night.
